Mahal Rugs
This hand-knotted Semi Antique Mahal rug from Markazi - 12x10 ft - presents a compelling Medallion composition woven in Ivory, Pink, a living record of one of Persia's great regional weaving traditions. The color palette of Mahal rugs is among the most inviting in all of Persian weaving - warm, accessible, and deeply harmonious. Brick and madder reds of varying intensity provide the foundation of many compositions, paired with warm camel and ivory grounds that give designs breathing room, accented with navy blues, sage greens, and occasional soft yellow. Natural dyes develop a characteristic aged warmth that makes semi-antique and antique Mahal rugs particularly beloved by collectors and interior designers.
Many of the finest Mahal rugs were produced in generous room-size formats calibrated for the large reception rooms of Western homes - a testament to the sophisticated market awareness of the Sultanabad weaving industry. These large-format rugs are particularly prized today for their ability to anchor spacious contemporary interiors, providing both the visual warmth of authentic Persian handcraft and the practical scale needed to define a large room's floor plane effectively.
Semi-antique and antique Mahal rugs offer qualities impossible to obtain in new production: the mellowed, harmonious color palette that only decades of aging can produce, the subtle visual complexity of a surface that carries the marks of its history, and the deeper-than-usual pile density that results from the natural consolidation of wool fibers over time. A fine antique Mahal rug brings irreplaceable warmth and character to any interior it occupies.
Mahal rugs represent one of the great commercial weaving traditions of the Arak region in central Persia, produced as an integral part of the broader Sultanabad carpet industry that flourished in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Sultanabad - the historical name for Arak - became one of the most important centers of Persian rug production for the Western export market, and Mahal rugs formed a significant portion of this output, prized for their graceful floral designs and warm accessible color palettes.
