Hamadan Rugs
A superb example of Hamadan weaving heritage, this 12x9 ft Semi Antique rug showcases the celebrated Herati design of Hamadan, rendered here in rich tones of Red, Blue with the authority of long tradition. The extraordinary
variety within Hamadan production reflects the cultural diversity of the hundreds of villages that contributed to this tradition over centuries. Each village developed its own design specialties, local dyeing practices,
characteristic color combinations, and individual interpretations of shared design motifs - giving the Hamadan family of rugs an inexhaustible range of character and individual expression that rewards sustained collecting and
close study.
Semi-antique and antique Hamadan rugs are particularly valued for the warm, mellowed complexity that their natural dyes develop with age. The madder reds soften toward a warm brick tone, the indigo navies deepen into a rich
periwinkle, and the undyed camel grounds develop a golden warmth that no new production can replicate. These are the authentic colors of time - honest, beautiful, and entirely irreproducible by artificial means.
Hamadan rugs represent one of the great weaving traditions of western Persia, produced across hundreds of individual villages in the ancient Hamadan Province whose rug-making heritage stretches back over two thousand years. The
city of Hamadan - one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world - has served as a trading and collection center for the surrounding village production for centuries, lending its name to a broad and remarkably
varied family of hand-knotted rugs.
Village weavers across the Hamadan region work primarily with the Turkish symmetrical knot on cotton foundations, producing a dense, durable pile structure well-suited to the rigors of daily household use. The most common design
traditions include the beloved Herati pattern - a rosette enclosed within a diamond of lancet leaves - alongside bold geometric medallion compositions and all-over Mina Khani floral repeat patterns drawn with the confident,
slightly abstracted style of village handcraft.
