Zanjan rugs come from the Zanjan Province of northwestern Persia, situated at the geographic and cultural crossroads between the great Tabriz weaving tradition to the northwest and the broad Hamadan village weaving tradition to
the south. This unique position has given Zanjan weavers access to design influences and technical traditions from multiple directions, resulting in rugs that combine the bold geometric sensibility of northwestern tribal weaving
with elements of the refined floral vocabulary of nearby urban centers.
Village weavers of Zanjan work primarily with the Turkish symmetrical knot on cotton foundations, producing rugs with a dense, durable pile well-suited to active household use. The design repertoire includes bold geometric
medallion compositions, all-over Herati patterns rendered in confident village style, and occasionally more elaborate floral compositions reflecting the influence of formal city weaving traditions - a versatility that reflects
