generations. Senneh rugs - produced in Sanandaj, the historic capital of Kurdistan Province known to Western rug traders as Senneh - occupy a unique and distinguished position in Persian city weaving, celebrated for their
extraordinary technical fineness, sophisticated design vocabulary, and unique synthesis of the classical Persian formal tradition with the distinctly Kurdish artistic sensibility of the weaving culture that produces them.
The technical refinement of Senneh pile rugs is remarkable by any standard. Weavers work with extremely fine yarns, tying individual Persian asymmetrical knots at very high densities to produce a smooth, compact pile surface of
great detail and visual clarity. The characteristic Senneh pile is significantly flatter and more compact than most Persian village productions, giving these rugs a different visual and tactile quality - possessed of a smooth,
silky precision that is entirely distinctive.
The Herati pattern finds its most refined expression in Senneh production. Here the pattern is drawn with a delicacy of line and precision of spacing that elevates it from a commonly used village motif to a work of genuine design
refinement, demonstrating what skilled urban weavers working with fine materials and high knot counts can achieve even with the most familiar design vocabulary.
Senneh weavers employ a color palette of sophisticated restraint reflecting the cultivated aesthetic culture of Sanandaj. Deep madder reds, rich indigo navies, warm ivory grounds, and accents of soft gold and rose combine in
compositions of considerable chromatic elegance. Natural dyes of high quality, processed with accumulated technical knowledge, achieve colors of genuine depth and subtlety that reward close and sustained attention.
