What You Should Know Before You Buy

Important Information About Our Authentic Hand-Knotted Persian Rugs

At Los Angeles Home of Rugs, we are committed to complete transparency about the products we sell. Every rug in our collection is 100% hand-knotted by master craftspeople in Persia. We do not stock machine-made rugs, hand-tufted rugs, hand-hooked rugs, or any other rug produced by methods that compromise quality, durability, or authenticity. This commitment ensures that every piece you purchase is a unique, genuine work of art that will last for generations.

We want you to feel fully informed before making your purchase decision. Please read the following important information about the natural characteristics of authentic hand-knotted Persian rugs so that you know exactly what to expect when your rug arrives.

Important Product Information

Natural Irregularity is a Sign of Authenticity

One of the most distinctive and celebrated characteristics of authentic hand-knotted Persian rugs is their natural irregularity. Because every knot in our rugs is tied individually by hand, small variations in size, shape, pile height, and color are a natural and unavoidable part of the weaving process. These micro-variations, known as abrash in the rug trade, are not defects. They are evidence of genuine handcraft and are considered by collectors and experts to be a hallmark of an authentic piece.

No two hand-knotted Persian rugs are precisely the same, even when woven from the same design by the same weaver. This individuality is precisely what makes each piece one of a kind and what distinguishes it from any machine-made product. Please refer to the product photographs on our website for a close representation of the specific rug you are considering.

Measurements and Shape

All of our one-of-a-kind rugs are in very good to excellent condition. However, please note that some hand-knotted rugs may not be a geometrically perfect square or rectangle, and some may vary slightly in width or length across different points of the rug. This is a natural characteristic of hand-knotted construction and is not considered a defect.

All measurements provided on our website and in our catalog are always taken from the widest and longest points of the rug. If precise dimensions are critical for your installation, we encourage you to contact us before purchasing so we can provide exact measurements of the specific piece you are considering.

Tip: For critical installations such as under a dining table or between furniture pieces, always add a margin of 2 to 3 inches when planning your layout to account for natural shape variations.

Antique and Vintage Rugs: Character and Condition

All of our vintage and antique Persian rugs are professionally washed and treated before being listed for sale. However, due to their age and the natural wear that comes with decades of use and history, some pieces may exhibit minor blemishes, signs of age, or previous professional repairs. These may include:

  • Gently worn pile areas that reflect years of use and foot traffic
  • Slight thinning or low pile in specific areas
  • Previous professional repair work on the foundation, pile, or fringe
  • Minor color variation due to natural fading of organic dyes over time
  • Small patches or restored areas that are typical of antique textile conservation

We believe these characteristics are an intrinsic part of each rug's charm, history, and authenticity. An antique Persian rug that shows its age gracefully is not a flawed product. It is a genuine artifact with a story. All condition notes relevant to a specific piece are disclosed in the product listing and photographs. If you have questions about the condition of a specific rug, please contact us before purchasing.

Color Appearance and Screen Display

We photograph all of our rugs in natural daylight without filters or post-processing editing. However, the colors of Persian rugs may appear slightly different on your device depending on your screen's calibration, brightness settings, and color profile. Natural lighting in your home will also affect the appearance of your rug after delivery.

We encourage you to use our high-resolution photographs and zoom features to examine each rug as closely as possible. If you would like additional photographs taken in different lighting conditions, or close-up images of specific areas of a rug, please contact us before placing your order and we will be happy to provide them.

Texture After Shipping

Due to the nature of packaging for transit, the pile of your Persian rug may feel slightly pressed or flattened when you first unroll it. This is entirely normal and is not a defect of any kind. In most cases the pile will naturally recover its full height and softness within a few days of being laid flat in your home.

Tip: To speed up pile recovery, lay the rug flat in a well-ventilated room for 24 to 48 hours and gently brush the pile in the direction of the weave with a soft-bristle brush. Avoid placing heavy furniture on the rug during this initial period.
