Persian Handwoven: Batik, the Traditional Fabric

Silkscreen prints are made by forcing paint or ink onto a surface through a stretched piece of cloth, and Batik is a method of printing colored patterns on cloth that involves putting wax over some parts of the fabric.

Osku is one of the few cities where Batik printing centers operate. Now, Osku is known as the capital of Batik in Persia. Batik dyeing industry is traditional coloring on textile fabrics, especially silk, and a technique of wax-resist dyeing used in crafting handmade shawls. In Osku, Batik prints is called “Kelagayi”. Weaving silk fabrics have been popular in Azerbaijan for a long time ago. The exact history of Batik prints is still unknown, but some specialists believe that since Azerbaijan is located in the path of the Silk Road, this print has entered Persia from China.

In Osku, there is a kind of silk fabric known as “Kelagayi” scarves which is dyed using the special method of Batik. Batik was incorporated in Persian spiritual heritage as the most important art industry to the national record in 2010.
