Tabriz is an old city; in Assyrian sources, it was mentioned that typically it was built in 791 A.C. and the building of this city was related to Zobide, wife of the Caliph Harun al-Rashid in Baghdad, who had the tendency to have a city with a moderate climate.

Tabriz was selected as the first capital of Safavid at the beginning of the sixteenth century. Rug weaving is so old in Tabriz; this city was a major center of rug weaving in the Safavid era. Later the number of demands of foreign companies in Tabriz indicated how many rugs with high quality and special styles were common in this city. Ziegler and Persiche Teppiche Aktien Gesellschaft, a significant German company, had a branch and were active in weaving a kind of rug called Petag that usually was a classic rug.

Rugs of Tabriz in the nineteenth century enjoyed a special elegance and besides being inspired by traditional Persian designs, had innovative and new designs, too.
