Persian Rugs: Weaving in Golestan

Los Angeles Home of Rugs on Feb 19th 2022

Turkmen people are an ethnic group who live in the east part of Mazandaran and the north part of Khorasan and Turkmenistan, and the northwest part of Afghanistan.

Turkmen rugs weaving has been common since the time of the Scythians (7th century BC- 3rd century BC) and was widely used in other periods along with other methods of sewing. The peak periods of this art are in the period of Afsharid (1736-1796), Zand (1751-1794), and Qajar (1789-1925). This art has a long history in Persia.

Turkmen rugs woven mostly by Turkmen girls and women in the northern Golestan come in eye-catching and mesmerizing designs, attracting many Europeans and Americans to this great piece of handcraft.

Persian rugs are sought after internationally for their delicate designs and good quality. A medallion pattern is arguably the most characteristic feature of all Persian rugs. However, there is tremendous variation in the shapes and sizes of the medallions and how they are used in various rugs. It’s not wrong to say that no two rugs will have the same medallion layout.
